Careers in Business Services

Business services

Business services are non-product related activities that support a business but do not create a tangible commodity. These activities include consulting, marketing, logistics (including travel and facilities services), staffing services, waste handling, shipping and administration to name a few. Nearly every company uses some type of business service in some form.

Companies use business services to save time and resources by outsourcing tasks that do not fall under their core competencies. They also utilize them to reduce overhead costs and to tap into new markets and customers. Many businesses have seasonal output fluctuations and benefit from a business-to-business service provider’s ability to scale up or down their services to meet demand.

Examples of business services are a graphic design firm that produces logos, signs, and packaging, or a consulting firm that offers advice on new products and strategies. Other types of business services include a warehousing and logistics provider that organizes, controls, manages and fulfills inventory for clients and helps them to optimize their supply chain operations. Another example is a company that tests electronic devices for compliance with industry standards.

Careers in business services are diverse and can offer excellent opportunities for advancement. If you enjoy working in a fast-paced environment and have strong interpersonal communication skills, this may be the industry for you. However, if you don’t like pressure-filled environments or are not good at meeting tight deadlines, you may want to look elsewhere for a job opportunity.
